Focus Question: What are the three states of matter, their characteristics and how are they changed?
Everything around us is made up of matter. There are three states of matter; solid,
liquid and gasses. If a material is
heated or cooled the state of the material is changed. If you heat a solid it changes into a liquid
and then into a gas. When a gas is
cooled it changes into a liquid and then a solid. Water is a common substance that is used to
explain changing states of matter. It is
water when it is a liquid, ice when it is frozen and steam when it is gas.
Step Two: Complete the activity to observe the different states of matter and answer the questions below.
1. At what temperature does ice melt and turn into its liquid stf water? 2. What is the process that is happening to change the state? 3. How do you turn water back to ice? 4. At what temperature does the water become ice? 5. When you keep increasing the heat to 100°C what happens to the ice? 6. How do you turn the steam back into it's liquid state of water? |
